Steel-Specific Reality · The Mill Floor Is Hostile

A steel mill is not a server room. Red iron-oxide dust, mill scale, slag particulates, EAF radiant heat, harmonic-rich electrical environments, and conductive metallic dust make every off-the-shelf data center assumption wrong. Iron oxide dust is conductive. Off-the-shelf IT racks fail in months — shorted power supplies, fan-bearing seizure, optical-link degradation. Spec: NEMA 12 / IP55 minimum, gasketed doors, sealed gland plates, positive-pressure HEPA filtration.
HEAT
35–45 °C ambient
ASHRAE TC 9.9 recommends 18–27 °C. Steel mills routinely run 35–45 °C ambient near EAF / BOF / reheat furnace lines. Spec: in-rack closed-loop cooling above 8 kW, redundant chiller circuits, derated GPU TDP envelope.
VIBRATION
Hot-strip and rolling mill
Sustained low-frequency vibration shortens HDD life, loosens connectors, fatigues PCB solder. Spec: SSD-only storage, locked-screw connectors, vibration-damped rack feet, SNMP-monitored vibration sensor per cabinet.
ELECTRICAL
Harmonics & transients
EAF and rolling-mill drives create harmonic distortion, voltage sags, transient inrush. Spec: dedicated transformer feed, double-conversion online UPS, type-1 + type-2 surge protection, IEC 61850 GOOSE-tolerant Ethernet on the OT side.
SAFETY
Hazardous-area zones
Some areas are ATEX / IECEx classified zones near gas lines and oil cellars. Spec: rack lives in a non-hazardous L3 control room; only Jetson edge nodes operate in classified zones, in certified enclosures.

FAQ

Why not just colocate in our existing IT data center?

Latency and zone hygiene. The IT data center is L4. Putting AI compute there means every PLC stream has to round-trip through the IDMZ, killing your sub-100ms inference budget. The L3 rack lives where the OT data lives.

Can we use existing servers?

For non-GPU workloads (dashboards, historian replication), yes — your existing servers are fine and we'll integrate. For training and inference at GB300 / H200 scale, no — the thermal envelope and PCIe topology matter and we ship purpose-built nodes.

How do we handle vendor remote support without a cloud bridge?
